Thin Ice

Flash Fiction by Richard J. Schneider

The four children, cousins and siblings, squealed while their minder, one of the kid’s big sister, blithely scrolled through her cellphone as the youngsters tricked or treated their way up the driveway to the stately three-story brick house guarded by dozens of huge blow up “terrifying” Halloween creatures all but one dancing in the light evening breeze. After the front door transactions, the group sprinted from the front porch, poured onto the front yard, zigged and zagged amongst the All Hallows’ Eve monsters, all but one still fluttering while that one flashed a move so quick no one noticed, before the kids hit the sidewalk and reassembled across the street at another all dark house when one of the children said, “Where’s Billy?”
